The green-lipped mussel (lat. Perna Canaliculus) originates from New Zealand. There it has been used for many years by the indigenous people of New Zealand – the Maoris – as a food and also as a remedy. The green-lipped mussel got its name from the green-colored rim found on its shell. The green-lipped mussel is farmed in the coastal regions of New Zealand, mainly in the Marlborough Sounds and the Hauraki Gulf. The green-lipped mussel is very similar to the blue mussel and is therefore also called New Zealand blue mussel.
What ingredients does the green-lipped mussel contain?
In the green-lipped mussel is found, among other things: Glycosaminoglycans, proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, minerals and trace elements.
In addition, it contains many minerals such as magnesium, sodium, calcium and potassium. Glycosamine glycans are important to keep the joints healthy and also the connective tissue. But with the age of the dog or with diseases of the joints such as osteoarthritis, the healthy joint structure is disturbed.
So with the green-lipped mussel powder, glycosaminoglycans are also fed to positively influence the healthy build-up of joint cartilage and synovial fluid. In the case of non-deoiled green-lipped mussel preparations, the content of omega-3 fatty acids is also quite high. Omega-3 fatty acids also have a positive influence on the dog’s musculoskeletal system.
The extract of the green-lipped mussel is offered in various dosage forms – both in tablet, capsule and powder form. It is usually mixed into the food of dogs as a powder.
How is the green-lipped mussel powder produced?
After harvesting, the shells of the mussel are removed. Water is then removed from the mussel contents in a centrifuge and the mass is freeze-dried. This method preserves the nutrients in the mussel very well, but thus deprives the mussel of the maximum amount of water. Thus, the product can be easily processed into powder.
For which dogs is green-lipped mussel powder useful as a dietary supplement?
Green-lipped mussel powder is suitable as a dietary supplement in principle for any dog. It is mainly used for e.g.:
- Joint diseases such as osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, etc..
- for dogs with high physical activity (sporting dogs)
- preventive for dogs suffering from diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
- for older dogs
What should you look for when buying?
The decisive factor when buying green-lipped mussel powder is not the price. You should make sure that during the production of the powder, the mussels are processed freeze-dried. This is the only way to ensure that all important nutrients and nutritive substances are retained as far as possible. Check the content of glycosaqminoglycan (GAG) contained in the powder. Vague statements such as “at least 2%” or “between 2% and 4%” are merely limit definitions. Useful are products that consist of 100% green-lipped mussel powder. This way you get the full effect of the extract without adding cheaper raw materials.
How do you dose the green-lipped mussel powder?
I recommend you to use the green-lipped mussel powder several times a year as a cure. The dosage of the green-lipped mussel powder is adjusted to the size of the dog. Depending on the product, it is roughly recommended: for small dogs at 0.5 g daily and for larger dogs up to 1 g daily. The powder can be easily administered together with the daily feed. Please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging for the quantities.
How quickly does green-lipped mussel powder work?
As a rule, it takes some time before the effect of the green-lipped mussel powder sets in. Therefore, the product should be administered for several weeks, at best 8 weeks.
